Melatonin is an important super-antioxidant that works both in water and fat tissues. It also helps preserve NAD, so that sirtuins can do their job in protecting us from ageing. As we have discussed on this channel, NAD-boosters like Nicotinamide Riboside (NR) or Nicotinamide Mononucleotide (NMN) have recently become popular for longevity. Melatonin is also deeply involved in energy metabolism in a number of ways, including insulin sensitivity, GHF-1 factor, p53, and in epigenetics in different ways. Additionally melatonin is a key player in the immune system, both as a kick-starter of it and as an organiser. It helps protect against cancer and much more. There are things many of us do to inhibit natural melatonin production that you can avoid. These include exposure to blue light in the evenings and exposure to electromagnetic radiation when we sleep. We can also eat foods rich in tryptophan (which is used to produce melatonin in the body) and melatonin directly, like sour cherries.
